Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Misleading Congress

Ex- FBI head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a congressional proceeding.

The former director's lawyer filed the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple causes including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was indicted shortly after Trump pushed his attorney general to proceed against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative informed the magistrate they planned to file multiple legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to take over the proceedings.

The former director's legal matter was first handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Legal Setting

James Comey appeared in good spirits as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was joined by his wife, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government terminated.

Following the reading to the judge read his rights and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he understood the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Background Context

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the time, he was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey sparked a counter-response from Democrats when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, leading to disapproval from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey provided false information to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the upper house by claiming he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also accuse Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

In a video Mr Comey posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a trial."

The charges against the former director surfaced after Trump published on social media calling for his top legal official, Pam Bondi, prosecute the former director and other people.
