Brave Train Staff Member Suffers Life-Threatening Wounds During Multiple Knife Attack on Express Service

A courageous train employee who stepped in to save passengers during a mass knife incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Event

CCTV footage reportedly shows the employee attempting to stop the attacker as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in custody for interrogation. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Reaction and Consequences

The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been released from medical care.

A bystander recorded the suspect waving a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced police on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking law enforcement officer.

Union Response and Calls for Measures

Train associations were swift to commend staff and call for increased measures. One union official stated he would be “requesting urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest available support, resources and effective procedures in operation”.

A different union representative encouraged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine security, to support the impacted employees, and to ensure nothing like this occurs again”.

Driver Praised for Rapid Action

The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He did not halt the train in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a association representative.

Additional Information

Police said they got the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness described initially wondering if the event was a Halloween joke, but quickly understood from individuals' expressions that it was serious.

Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the event was a terrorist incident and have requested the public to come forward with any further details.

Train operations on the impacted route are expected to experience disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where possible.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation are asked to contact police by sending a message a designated number with a reference code.
